You Meet In A Tavern, You Die In A Dungeon

Client: Ursidice

Brief: "Black & White/Grayscale but willing to take some input from you if you think splash colour would be good. Clean, readable design, with interesting header fonts for sections. Think ODnD, Fighting Fantasy, but with your own view on how to modernise it."

Deliverables and scope: Kickstarter assets consisting of three preview spreads delivered as mockups, project image and section headers, and full layout of three 30-pages zines for printing and digital distribution

Results: the Kickstarter campaign raised £16,484, surpassing its initial target of £5,000

For this project the client relied heavily on my expertise to make decisions and kept me involved in all stages of production. First of all, based on the existing illustrations and the project brief, I designed the game’s wordmark and assets for the Kickstarter campaign (hero image, section headers, layout previews and mockups). The campaign did so well that the client was able to commission an additional deck of cards and its tuckbox as well as a poster. For the editing phase I was consulted and asked to provide an estimate of the amount of words that needed to be cut down based on the layout style I had established. During the layout phase I was given free rein to place the existing illustrations and give suggestions to commission additional ones. In the final stage of the layout phase, I was in constant communication with the editing team to discuss potential edits in the manuscript to make sure the text would fit the pages in the best possible way.

This almost complete control over the art direction of the project gave me the latitude I needed to maintain a visual cohesion between the three zines and the deck of card that were printed.
