Hyperweapon

Client: Rookie Jet Studio

Brief: "I would like a design that isn’t overly complicated but has enough flair around the edges to stand out among other games. I think the layout would benefit from a more "playful" and "modern" design that fits in with the game's synopsis and goals."

Deliverables and scope: full layout of a 65-page book for print-on-demand and digital distribution

Results: the Kickstarter campaign raised $4,275, surpassing its initial target of $2,500

The references and various media that had inspired the project were all pointing to a very specific era of design: the late 90s and early Y2K. The key elements I drew from it were organic shapes, 3D effects and science-fiction adjacent typefaces.

The faux-3D frames featuring round corners, bubbly shapes, and colour gradients were the perfect way to convey the playfulness of the game and its illustrations. This aspect was pushed further through the use of different colour palettes in the various sections of the book, which also doubled as an elegant way to signpost. The two header fonts, Niro Black and Cageroll, were additional elements I used to emphasise the game’s inspirations and tone. Eurostile, with its long straight lines, was picked as a body font to reflect the modern aspect of the project. The balance between complexity and flair was achieved by assembling all these elements on a flexible grid that allowed me to introduce some variety in the layout.
